Nady on the trade
David Briggs at Pirates.com talks about the trade that sent Xavier Nady to the Pirates:
His cell phone silenced, Xavier Nady spent his off-day on Monday lounging on a Miami beach with his fiancee. It was an idyllic day.
At least until he glanced at the phone's screen and strangely saw what he calls "a bunch of missed calls from random numbers."
"So I knew something was up," Nady said.
Something was. The 27-year-old was being shipped from the league-best Mets to, well, the last-place Pirates.
"It was more or less shocking," he said.
As for Nady, the Pirates see him as their everyday first baseman, with Sean Casey and Craig Wilson out of the fold. That he was New York's starting right fielder and only has 45 career appearances at first base in parts of five seasons with the Padres and Mets seems a distant concern for Pittsburgh's brass.
Most important for the Pirates, they will control Nady (who is arbitration-eligible at season's end) for three more seasons and have Chacon under contract through 2007.
