Omar for President

Adam Salazar at Shea Baseball writes about Omar and how good of a job he has done:

Omar made an immediate splash by landing Pedro Martinez fresh off a World Series victory in the 2004-05 offseason. It remains to be seen how the pitcher will perform in years three and four of his contract, but even if Petey never picks up ball again after this season, it’s still money well spent. Without Pedro, the organization doesn’t spin on a dime the way it did. Without Pedro, Beltran never comes. Without Pedro, the ‘05 television ratings are crap, thus SportsNet NY would be generating less from advertisers this season - eventually this revenue stream will funnel itself into payroll. Pedro made the Mets relevant the moment Omar signed him.

Omar’s been aggressive in scouting Latin American talent and although the “Los Mets” name has been used against him by morons like Chris Russo, we all know Latin America is a hotbed of baseball talent. The Mets now have a strong presence down there especially in the Dominican Republic. Minaya grasps the economics of this game and although he has the Wilpons ever bourgeoning wallet behind him, he’s known for placing the utmost value on scouting and developing young players. Recent Yankees teams have proved you don’t win by signing free agents en mass. Instead, you build from within and I was relieved to see the Mets' General Manager retain Lastings Milledge at the deadline. Milledge’s athleticism is exactly what Minaya wants on the roster.

Minaya’s finger prints are all over these first place Mets. Pedro, Beltran, Delgado, Valentin, Lo Duca, Wagner, Maine, Pelfrey, El Duque, Sanchez & Roberto Hernandez - need I go on?
