Wagner obsessed with 400
Marty Noble at Mets.com writes if Billy Wagner is obsessed with reaching 400 saves:
A 400th save certainly is within reach for Wagner. He earned his 306th on Sunday.
Wagner does bring up 400 saves and the Hall of Fame on occasion. But that hardly makes him "obsessed." He also makes frequent mention of playing out his contract -- it expires after the 2009 season -- and retiring, so that would leave him three years to earn the remainder.
Beginning with 1997, his second season in the big leagues, Wagner never has had a three-season sequence in which he has amassed fewer than 76 saves. So it appears he could get quite close.
Will 400 saves put him in the Hall? Probably not. It hasn't worked for Lee Smith. John Franco probably won't gain election. Jeff Reardon had 367 and was on the HOF ballot one year before dropping off because he didn't get enough support from voters. High-profile saves -- i.e., saves in the postseason -- seem to have more influence than 400 regular-season saves.
