Wright the hero
Kenny Choi at SNY writes about David Wright and the qualities he has:
It's one thing to listen to Wright or any other athlete with a microphone in front of him, but it's another thing when he looks at you eye-to-eye and says what he believes. I honestly think this guy can be one of those rare players that sticks around with one team even if it costs him some dollars in the end. He's like a Don Mattingly (even though it was an injury that cut his career short), or Cal Ripken, both who played for only one team in the majors.
Some athletes have said it's not about the almighty dollar. Some athletes lie. Others say it's really about for love of the game. When it's true, that's when we see athletes as our heroes. Post 9-11 has given us a deeper perspective as to what qualifies someone as a hero, but once in a while, it's okay to say an athlete is a hero or role model that children should admire and emulate. David Wright is that kind of athlete. (SNY and the Mets not paying me to say this because I've said before Derek Jeter has the same heroic qualities as well)
It's refreshing when we can take their word as truth and not be cynics in a sports world that is sometimes all about the Benjamins.
