Carter could be new third base coach

Eric Pfahler at the TC Palm, writes about Gary Carter and his chances of landing the Mets third base coaching job:

Hall-of-Fame catcher Gary Carter said he could find out this week whether he gets a shot at returning to the majors — this time as a coach.

Carter said he is one of three internal candidates interviewing for the New York Mets' third-base coaching job vacated by Manny Acta, who became the manager of the Washington Nationals on Nov. 14.

The other two candidates include Ken Oberkfell, who last year managed the Triple-A Norfolk Tides, and Hobe Sound resident Howard Johnson, who was the Tides' hitting coach.

New York Mets manager Willie Randolph and general manager Omar Minaya could make the decision before the annual winter meetings, which begin Monday in Orlando.
