Green Is A Defensive Handicap

What a diving catch last night by Shawn Green. I mean that guy is about as graceful as a rhino.

It’s almost getting to be that every ball hit towards right field is being let to drop in for a base hit or he’ll make some sort of ridiculous dive and more times than not the ball drops in for an extra base hit. Shawn Green is turning out to be a defensive liability and the Mets just can’t afford that this season, especially with Alou in left.

What will it take for Willie to just give that position to the eventual right fielder (Lastings Milledge) now? He has shown that he can handle himself in the field and at the plate, so why not just give him the job?

This is going to bother me until Green is relieved of his duties and becomes a bat off the bench.

Editor's Note: (from David): Not only is John absolutely right about Green, of whom I've long been a fan, but on top of that, a seasoned vet like Green, who used to be a Gold Glove caliber fielder, knows that in that situation, he needed to trap the ball or block it with his body or do ANYTHING he had to do to ensure it didn't go past him...and he didn't. He's supposed to be a cerebral player, and last night, home run aside, he was anything but. Next year's outfield of Gomez, Beltran & Milledge will feature 3 center fielders, backed up by a fourth in Endy Chavez, if re-signed, and we won't have to worry about such nonsense...and in the meantime, we still have Green...and the ability to dream about next season's outfield defense...
