The Young Guns

With the end of the regular season only a little under two months away, one starts to wonder if the Mets are going to go out and get replacement outfielders via a short term contract or simply stick to the two young guns (Lastings Milledge and Carlos Gomez).

Lasting Milledge has done nothing short of impressing the living daylights out of Willie and Omar since his call up on July 12th. He is currently hitting .305 and has 3 Home Runs, 16 Runs Batted In and a stolen base. Doing all of that in only 82 at bats this season shows a sign that Milledge has further matured faster than anyone could have predicted. If the kid’s hobby is to produce for a Rap artist and maybe appear on the albums, I say let him. There are a lot worse things he could be doing (*cough* throw a bat at an umpire, Delmon Young *cough*). Milledge gets my vote for right field this and next year.

Carlos Gomez does have room for improvement. After all he’s only 21 and does have some problems with handling Major League pitching, but where else could he benefit from the kind of teaching than in the Majors? He has shown that he can hang with the big boys and before he broke his hand he was batting .260 and had 2 Home Runs, 11 Runs Batted In and 9 Stolen Bases. He is going to be a superstar and has shown Reyes-esque. speed on the base paths. If it were up to me, having Gomez in the line up would be an upgrade over our current Right Fielder (Shawn Green) and plus they would be moving in another home grown talent from the Minors - Always a plus!

Forget about the veteran movement and just play these two budding stars. Then we fans can just sit back and watch a hopeful dynasty grow out of the core of Wright, Reyes, Milledge, Gomez, Maine, Perez, Beltran and Gotay.
