Wallace Matthews Should Be Ashamed

Joe D. at Mets Merized, brought o my attention a Newsday article by Wallace Matthews that Joe titled “A Very Rude Awakening”.

Thanks for the article Wallace. I mean that, really I do.

I mean to think that Yankee fans, most any way, want to pass their short comings onto the Mets to try and take the attention off of them is beyond me. All of the attention brought to them is made possible by them. The Joe Torre issue, the Alex Rodriguez issue and their free agents to be makes for one heck of a Yankee off season show.

It isn’t Mets faults that the general consensus agrees that there are more people in New York that are interested in what is going on with the Yankees, then the Mets. It’s not our faults that Sports Center and ESPN deem it necessary to focus on one team in baseball, rather than the Mets or Padres for that matter.

Here are a couple of my favorite excerpts from this heaving article:

In the past three days, the Yankees have been characterized as bullies. They have been called cowards, gutless, unable to take a punch.

I would have to agree with every one of those sentiments. If you apply them to the Mets, that is.

And you want to talk about money? At least the Yankees' hired gun, Roger Clemens, gave them seven outs in his final appearance. Tom Glavine - a cut-rate mercenary compared to Clemens but a mercenary just the same - got what he wanted out of the Mets, his 300th win, but when it came time to give something back, he couldn't get out of the first inning. Didn't seem to be too broken up about it afterward, either.

Throw the paychecks out and it is obvious that the "rich" kids showed character. The poor souls in Flushing, those $115-million working-class heroes, did not. To say the Yankees should have done better because of their payroll but absolve the Mets despite theirs is not only lazy but fraudulent, not to mention hypocritical.

For years, we have listened to the Mets and their fans whine about always being overshadowed by the Yankees. We're not hearing too much of that right now, are we?

Hiding behind the Yankees is working out quite nicely for the Mets these days.

It's sad that Matthews has to vent his grief at Mets' fans...I hope for the sake of his family that he doesn't bring home anger when he has writer's block, or the gardener didn't trim his hedges right or someone ate his last pretzel! Seriously, I have never been much of a fan of his writing, but respect his right to say what is on his mind...however, I would expect an 8-year old to not be able to point a finger at himself (or in this case, his team), not a supposedly "mature" writer. Newsday is one of the first sites I visit in the morning, being that I live in Los Angeles and miss my daily shot of N.Y. News...however, over the past 4 years or so, I have seen the N.Y. Times overtake Newsday in quality of sports' writing (and I am NOT a big fan of the Times), especially when it comes to baseball, Murray Chass in particular. Once upon a time, Tom Verducci and Jon Heyman wrote for Newsday...now we have Mr. Matthews? Sports Illustrated online, here I come!!!! And IF Matthews' plan is to further distance Yankee and Met fans, he is on the road to success! Get a grip, mister!!! The smell of sour grapes all over you is NOT a good smell!
