Is Santana Closer To Being A Met? 2 Options For 2009?
According to Jon Heyman, on his twice weekly segment on WFAN with Mike & The Mad Dog, the Mets not only remain in the hunt for Twins' starter, Johan Santana, but some believe that they have put forth the best offer for Santana. There will be a package that contains any number of the following: Guerra, Mulvey, Humber, Pelfrey, Heilman, Smith, Martinez & Gomez (not ALL, but probably 4-5 of the above list). At this point, as John Young pointed out earlier today, it's a heck of a lot harder to get a front-line starter than it is to acquire outfield help, and he's right. As much as I have been reluctant to see the Mets' trade so many top quality young players, after Jonathan reminded me of "Baseball America Syndrome" and names such as Alex Escobar and Gregg Jeffries who never reached their potential, I am less reluctant to move any combo of the above-names. ("Baseball America Syndrome" is something that Jonathan and I labelled whenever BA dubs a Mets' player as being the "next big thing" - from Shawn Abner and Kirk Presley to Jeffries and Escobar- only to see them never pan out. Need I say more than Wilson-Pulsipher-Isringhausen?) Check out Heyman via the WFAN website by clicking here.
Moving forward, there's a good chance that the Indians won't be able to re-sign C.C. Sabathia next season, as well as a strong chance that the Braves won't be able to sign first baseman, Mark Teixeira. If we WERE to acquire Santana, we could watch next year as top teams try to throw money at Sabathia while we made a full-court press to sign Tex. I could dream about signing both, but the chances of that happening are less than slim...but Tex might become a reality...
