The Waiting Is The Hardest Part...'Cause There's Always a "But" at the End of the Sentence...

Thanks, Tom Petty!

Right now, Mets fans everywhere are on pins and needles, waiting to hear that Johan Santana's signing has been finalized. Jayson Stark, over at ESPN, writes that the Mets and Santana's agent, Peter Greenberg, are still far apart and negotiations will take until at least Friday (read it by clicking here.) Stark also learns from a Mets' source that there is still interest between the Mets and pitcher Kyle Lohse, and that there is a chance that both Lohse and Santana might end up in the Mets' rotation next season (could also be a mere smokescreen). I know that the Mets' organization, while excited right now, are not showing major excitement outwardly yet, as there still is no deal in place.

It's like we all know that our best friend's wife is pregnant, but he doesn't know it yet, and we're all sitting at a table in a restaurant, waiting for his wife to let him know! But it's almost time for dessert, and still, no surprise has been announced...

IF Omar wasn't able to sign Santana, and he remained property of the Twins with the deal not going through, the egg on the face of the entire organization would be too big to come back from. With Citi Field opening next season, there's NO WAY that this deal doesn't get done...and yet, being a Mets' fan for so long, there's always the "but" at the end of the sentence...

Hopefully, at this time tomorrow, everyone will have their jerseys ordered and the ink will be dry on Santana's contract...
