How the Mets Almost Didn't Sign Santana...

A great article was just posted on SI.com by Tom Verducci about how the Mets almost didn't sign Johan, and how Santana was prepared to walk away from the deal over the final $5 million dollars.

From Verducci:
"I told you I wasn't backing off my number," Santana told Fred Wilpon. "I appreciate your offer, but I'm passing on it."

Wilpon replied, "I've been in business a long time. That's a lot of money to walk away from."

"No disrespect to you," Santana said. "But I deserve it. I'll just go back and pitch and I'll get it later. Alex Rodriguez is the highest paid player in the game. I'm the best pitcher. I'm not even asking for that [Rodriguez] kind of money."

A short read that truly shows the competitive spirit of Johan, who states to Omar:

"You get my clause, I'll get my Cy Young."

Music to our ears, Johan....sheer, joyful, music!!!

I am still basking in the Giants glory, and haven't been able to catch up much with the Johan press conference, which Jonathan and John (JJ squared) had been able to do. In addition to our site, check out Metsblog for additional insight, as site owner, Matt Cerone, attended the press conference.

Johan...Pedro...Johan...Pedro...better then counting money!!!!
