Opening Day Thoughts & Notes
Man- the Phils just went ahead in the top of the 7th, scoring 3 runs to take the lead. Last year, in all 12 games that the Mets lost to the Phils, they were ahead by at least 2 runs in each game- and here I thought 2007 was behind us...and where, oh where, has Pedro Feliciano gone???...Keith Hernandez quipped "it's the 7th inning and I think most people have finally found a place to park" - and Mayor Bloomberg was promoting mass transit when interviewed by SNY's Kevin Burkhardt between innings earlier...the ad for Honda in CF is very distracting- running towards it, I could see how a player might get spooked by seeing a car coming at them out of the corner of their eyes! And I own 3 Hondas!...Carlos Delgado hit a booming homer off of Phils starter, Jamie Moyer- his 8th all-time off Moyers - any chance we can ask the Phils to trade him to the next team we face? And so on?...and isn't it just wrong to call any pitch that Jamie Moyer throws a "fastball"? Like jumbo shrimp?...Chase Utley is awesome - and he tied a record by being hit by a pitch 3 times in one game!...Where, o where, has Jose Reyes gone? He finally got a single in the 7th- will he steal?...Luis Castillo left after the 5th, with knee soreness - Easley replaced him - and as Keith pointed out, this is the first "cool" game the Mets have had, weather-wise, so let's hope it's just a one-day thing ( is it EVER for the Mets?)...Perez looked great again, not quite as good as his Marlins game, but close, but I still hold my breath every time he pitches...nope, no steal for Reyes and Easley hit a shot, like an earlier one by David Wright, that should have been a homer but the wind kept in the park- crud!...Shane Victorino is making everyone forget Aaron Rowand in a hurry- he had one catch where RF Jayson Werth ran into him like a linebacker, he held the ball and neither one got hurt (imagine THAT, fellow Mets' fans)...and then he caught a ball near the wall that he had to run full speed to catch up to, bouncing off the wall, a sure gold glove-like play...after being away from Shea for many years, Dave Kingman was spotted by Keith in the stadium today...there is only 100 feet between where Shea ends and where Citi Field begins, creating, as Ron Darling said, a wind tunnel not unlike those found in Manhattan, certainly effecting balls hit to the outfield...is it just me, or does that IZOD sign in the outfield bring you back to 1983, when the little alligator on your polo shirt was the "in" thing, like Member's Only jackets?...Schneider has 2 passed balls today- a bit of a shocker, to say the least...where exactly has our much hyped offense gone against sub-standard Phillies relief pitchers?...Heilman, following Schoeneweis and Sosa, hasn't looked too good so far...the ump gave Moyers nothing to work with today- shades of Tom Glavine's career as a Met...the bullpen is not looking too good right now, that's for sure, as Heilman just let another run in and it sits at 5-2 and I am going to be sick...more later...
