Blink & You Missed It! 1/8th of Mets' Roster Changes
Today the Mets have made a number of roster changes, in an effort to refresh their bullpen and rotation and fortify their bench.
OUT
Angel Pagan - Disabled List
Jorge Sosa - Designated For Assignment
Nelson Figueroa - Designated For Assignment
IN
Claudio Vargas- takes Figueroa's spot in the rotation
Matt Wise - takes Sosa's spot in the bullpen
Fernando Tatis - takes Pagan's spot on the bench
Thankfully, the Mets did NOT send Joe Smith down to AAA, as he's been our second most reliable reliever, although he does have minor league options still.
Pagan was hurt enough making his circus catch last week versus the Dodgers (I saw it live) to merit a tour on the DL, although I thought that they would have back-dated it. Tatis can play first, and perhaps spell Delgado tonite against a lefty.
Wise is still a wildcard- he can be that elusive seventh inning reliever we've needed to keep us in games, the pitcher that Heilman has yet to be, or can possibly spell Sanchez until HE gets his stuff together.
Vargas makes sense right now for one major reason- we have to release him soon if he didn't get a chance in the majors, and he's been reasonably okay in New Orleans, enough so to merit the chance in the majors. If he doesn't do the trick over the next few starts, we still have some ammo in the minors to utilize until Pedro comes back. Hopefully, Figueroa will clear waivers and accept an assignment to New Orleans- his has been a great story in this topsy-turvy season and it would be nice to see him make it back to the big club before too long, possibly as a long-reliever.
The only scary thing about this is that, with practically a quarter of the season in the books already (and man, does time fly), we are having to make so many roster changes at once, in an effort to increase team stability. Let's hope a second such "realignment" isn't necessary DURING the season!
