Best seventy eight million ever spent
Jon Heyman at SI.com writes about the two contracts the Mets made to secure their future with David Wright and Jose Reyes:
If ever there were two 23-year-olds who won't let their combined haul of a guaranteed $78.25 million go to their heads, they are David Wright (who just signed for $55 million) and Jose Reyes ($23.25 million).
If Wright and Reyes aren't multiyear megastars for the Mets, it won't be for lack of trying. The pair were the first two Mets to arrive at spring training, checking into Port St. Lucie almost simultaneously and beating their more veteran teammates by a couple of weeks. And now they are both legit MVP candidates (along with teammate Carlos Beltran).
They're so good that industry scuttlebutt says both new contracts are mega-bargains for the Mets. Reyes' contract for four years plus an option will save the Mets millions if he is anywhere near the player he appears to be (he leads the majors in triples and steals and is second in runs to Chase Utley). Even Reyes' $11 million option for a fifth year is $2 million shy of what Dodgers' shortstop Rafael Furcal makes.
