Minor League Tracker: Jason Vargas
Marc Jimenez at MiLB.com, writes about Zephyrs pitcher Jason Vargas and his almost no hitter:
Jason Vargas took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Tuesday as the New Orleans Zephyrs rolled to an 11-1 rout of the Salt Lake Bees at Zephyr Field.
Vargas (4-3) retired the first five batters before issuing a two-out walk to Ryan Budde in the second. He set down the next 14 Bees before stalling in the seventh.
After retiring leadoff batter Jeff Mathis, Vargas gave up back-to-back singles to Kendry Morales and Terry Evans, then served up a run-scoring base hit to Budde two batters later before exiting.
The 24-year-old left-hander, who made one start for the New York Mets on May 17, was charged with one run on three hits and a walk over a season-high 6 2/3 innings. He matched another season best with seven strikeouts.
