It Wasn't Supposed To Be Like This...

By Steve Plezia

Is this a bad dream?...Or are we going to look back at this in September and laugh (being that it is only May)?.....Why do I have a feeling it is the former and not the latter? Willie (apologies or not), appears to have cooked his own goose with his comments this week. "Off the record," he says? - Nothing is off the record with New York Media!!

These days, you can't even jest like that. How can he concentrate on managing a team to a World Series , when he is harboring these ridiculous thoughts? I am sure there is a small market team that he will be perfect for. He has completely lost control of his thoughts, his clubhouse, and what is happening on the field. How does Omar fix this?...Or How does Wilpon fix this?....

I am waiting for the game when Carlos Delgado actually dives for a ball at first base....what a joke!....Carlos Beltran seems to only play well when the team is playing well. It is NOT the other way around. Ask him to pull a team from the wreckage and he can't do it . He watches it go by like a third strike. Whether that third strike was this season , last season, or, in game seven against the Cardinals two years ago. He is starting to make me sick as well. Can't someone convince him that Pedro is pitching every day? It seemed like he only turned it up a notch when he was pitching...

I do not usually like it when a manger is let go in the middle of the season. Besides, who would the Mets hire?....Somebody needs to fire these guys up and make them play at another level. Who would you bring in at or before the deadline that will make a difference?.....Who could(would) be the next manager if something happened to Willie?.....

...At the beginning of the season, I said if the Mets play like they should, the Braves and Phillies would have to blaze trails to stay up with, catch, or pass up the Mets. Now, those teams have a little more wiggle room in their season for mistakes (not to mention the shocking Marlins) and they will still be completely in the race because the Mets are just handing these teams the chance to take the division - the "keys to the castle" if you will... The Mets are going to be the ones chasing (or not) these guys down the stretch. So , what do they have to do to accomplish this???????........ I haven't come up with that yet and clearly, the Mets haven't either. But I do feel that even though it is only May, time is fleeting, and so is opportunity and when the Mets finally get their act together, it may well be too far behind for any of it to matter on what was supposed to be a "fun filled last season" at good 'ole Shea Stadium...it's hard to say "how 'bout them Mets" right now without being sick to my stomach - NOT the way this season was supposed to go...

Editor's Note: This is a guest editorial from Steve Plezia, life-long Mets' fan and a loooong-time friend of David's. He's been loyal through thick and thin, and now that I know even HIS patience is being tested beyond an acceptable limit, we're really, really in trouble right now...makes one want to change the refrain to "Johan and??? and pray for rain..."
