Floyd Signs With Rays

Over at SI.com they write about Clif Floyd signing a one year deal with the Rays:

Cliff Floyd agreed Friday to a $3 million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays, who were searching for a left-handed hitter and someone to help replace Delmon Young in right field.

With the Rays, Floyd likely will be a designated hitter and platoon with Jonny Gomes and Rocco Baldelli in right field. That spot opened last month when Young was traded to Minnesota in a six-player deal that brought starting pitcher Matt Garza and shortstop Jason Bartlett to Tampa Bay.

Overlooking Floyd

Since the end of the season, I have been very distant to the Baseball world. Even so to overlook an obvious outfield possibility for the Mets.

Everyone’s favorite Cliff Floyd will become a free agent at the end of the World Series this season and what better man to bring to the Mets to possibly platoon with Alou in Left Field.

For Chicago this year, Floyd hit .284 and had 9 home runs and 45 runs batted in, in 108 games. Also in the 108 games he didn’t commit one error.

Now, although the Mets and Floyd had already said their goodbyes and parted ways, this might be the perfect time to bring the fan favorite and David Wright’ buddy back to Flushing, for no other reason then his hard nosed playing and leadership on and off the field.

Now the only thing the Cubs can do about this situation is exercise his option, but in the event they don’t and let him walk, Omar should be there like a vulture and pick off of the Cubs’ mistake. After all, that’s exactly what they did to the Mets after they failed to resign Floyd.

Cliff Floyd will always be known as a “Baseball Warrior” in many Met fans’ eyes. For his countless nights where he put himself out on the field with no regard to injuries that occurred through the course of the season. He will always be loved for his dedication and loyalty to the Mets and their fans.

Wherever he winds up next season, the team is going to have an invaluable commodity in Floyd. My only hope is that he will wind up back in a Mets uniform.

The Cubs haven't made any progress recently in talks with free agent Cliff Floyd.

The Chicago Tribune reported three weeks ago that the two sides were close to deal, but the paper has had little to say on the subject since. If the season started today, the Cubs would likely go with an outfield with Matt Murton in left, Jacque Jones in center and Alfonso Soriano in right. Trading Jones remains a possibility, but they don't seem to see Soriano as an option in center, meaning they'd have to get a stopgap back with Felix Pie still not ready.

While it's disappointing that Matt Murton is getting turned into a platoon player after putting together a great second half last season and finishing with a .297/.365/.444 line, Floyd likely will be an upgrade when healthy, and since the 34-year-old is a poor bet to play in even 120-130 games, Murton still figures to approach 400 at-bats.

There haven't been any other teams mentioned in connection with Floyd the last few days. The Mariners were supposed to be interested, but it's doubtful that they still want him after landing Jose Vidro. The A's and Orioles were previously reported to have some interest.

This could take a while. How many weeks do you suppose it would take to put together a complete history of Floyd's injuries anyway? And then, once it was finally compiled, it's not like you could overnight it to teams. The postage alone would cost more than Floyd's services for 2007.

Unlike Piazza, Floyd won't be a candidate for a multiyear deal. The A's would likely play him in left field against right-handers and let him DH on those rare occasions in which Piazza is used as a catcher. Should Floyd decide Oakland isn't the place for him, he could land with either the Cubs or Orioles.
