Duaner Sanchez should rejoin the Mets Tuesday, likely in place of rookie Carlos Muñiz. It would mark Sanchez's first time in the majors in nearly 21 months. Sanchez hit 92 mph during a scoreless appearance Saturday with Triple-A New Orleans. That outing marked the first time during Sanchez's rehab that he worked consecutive days.
Anthony DiComo at Mets.com gives a preview of tonight’s match up of the Mets and Phillies as well as an update on Duaner Sanchez:
Reliever Duaner Sanchez pitched two shutout innings on Tuesday for the St. Lucie Mets, and will pitch in back-to-back games for Triple-A New Orleans on Friday and Saturday. "He's very close," general manager Omar Minaya said.
With Spring Training nearing to a close and the season starting in a little less than two weeks, maybe it’s time that I start to get a little worried about some of the key players who still haven’t made their debut yet. I was reassuring myself when all of the injuries rose to the top that it was still early in ST to start freaking out, but it’s gone on for too long.
How is Duaner Sanchez still not ready to make a complete comeback? I understand that he had two surgeries since that fateful night in Miami, but I thought that he was in phenomenal shape and wouldn’t have a problem anymore? He’s sporting an ERA in the upper six’s and he needs frequent rest between appearances. This doesn’t exactly exemplify an elite set up man or any kind of reliever for that matter.
Carlos Delgado can’t win, can he? The guy goes through his worst season, has a balky hip, broke his hand in the last day of the season and now he gets brutalized by a broken bat. Besides this, he’s hitting on the Mendoza line. Can someone please give him an umbrella to protect him from that rain cloud that seems to be over his head?
Where in God’s green earth is Luis Castillo? He had his knees cleaned out over the off season like Carlos Beltran, but Beltran has found his way back into the lineup. If he doesn’t put a rush on it, he may be having Spring Training in the first month of the season and that’s never a good thing for the team.
The next thing we are going to hear about El Duque is that he needs to be put on a dialysis machine or in an iron lung with the way he’s going. So let me get this straight. You have surgery on your foot, but you don’t get the bunion removed? I don’t get it. Now because of the bunion he has to alter his delivery, which means no more almost kneeing himself in the face. And I know everyone has been beating this point like a piñata, but when a pitcher has to alter his delivery at the end of his career it can hardly ever end up being a good thing.
Both Brian Schneider and Ramon Castro are out with leg injuries and I’m about to have a freaking heart attack. First of all, Schneider has to get used to this bunch of pitchers. Especially with three of them (maybe) being the accomplished gamers that they are, need him to be able to know how they like to go about attacking the batters. The Mets can’t afford for Castro to be on the shelf if Schneider is already there. Who are we going to see come up from the minors to replace them then? There is no Alomar Jr. or Di Felice anymore and no matter how atrocious their hitting was, they were pretty decent defensive catchers.
With all of this going on, I don’t know what to think. Hopefully they can pull it all together before the beginning o the season. But if they don’t, this team is going to resemble the Padres in a hurry. All pitchingandnobats.

One red flag from this conversation though: Sanchez said he did feel tightness at the back of his right shoulder - but just "one time." As for manager Willie Randolph's suggestion that he might not be ready for Opening Day, Sanchez shrugged.
"Why don't we take it step by step," Sanchez said. "I don't want to say yes, I don't want to say no."

The New York Mets announced today that they have signed righthanded pitcher Duaner Sanchez to a one-year major league contract.
Sanchez, 28, missed last year after undergoing surgery on April 10th at New York's Hospital for Special Surgery when Mets Medical Director Dr. David Altchek inserted a screw in the coracoid, a small bone in front of his right shoulder, to repair a hairline fracture.

Sanchez hoped to pitch in the Dominican Republic this winter, but now he's simply shooting for spring training. While the Mets are hoping he'll come back and be a big part of their bullpen, it isn't something that can count on.
The number one place where the Mets need to make some major improvements is their Bullpen. In order to accomplish this feat and return it to it’s 2006 for there is really only a couple of moves that are going to be required, in my opinion anyway.
1. First of all the Mets have to figure out what they are going to do with Guillermo Mota and his 5.76 earned run average. After he spent the first 50 games on suspension, Mota showed us Met fans why baseball players go on the juice in the first place. He had the knack of making every in game situation considerably worse and cost the Mets some vital games as we can all tell. The Mets can try and move him in a trade and add some cash, or simply eat his contract and send him down to Triple-A to figure himself out.
2. The next move would have to be to sign a legitimate set up pitcher and one such a pitcher will be available.
Scott Linebrink was traded to the Brewers last season and will become a free agent at the end of the World Series. The Mets would become a considerably better team with his veteran presence in the pen. I would say they should sign him to a one year deal, worth $1.75MM. If there is another team willing to go beyond this bid, then the Mets should double up on the deal. They have no other option for a proven veteran set up man and must bring someone of Linebrink’s credentials in to help turn around the mess.
3. Duaner Sanchez has to do anything and everything to make sure that he will remain healthy for the 2008 season. After getting hit by the drunk driver in Miami in 2006, he has missed a year and a half to rotator cuff surgery and a hairline fracture. With Sanchez back in the pen, the Mets will have the option of pitching Sanchez or Linebrink in the eight inning role on any given night and the other, possibly pitching the seventh.
4. Joe Smith, the youngest member of the Mets bullpen, must do everything in his power during the off season to make sure that he doesn’t get dead arm syndrome in the middle of the season next year and let’s not forget to remind Willie Randolph not to over use the youngster and let him get his rest in between appearances.
5. Orlando Hernandez has shown that he doesn’t have the endurance to go the stretch in the starting pitcher’s slot. So the logical move would be to the pen, where he can act as a two headed long inning monster with Jorge Sosa and make the inning or two appearance if the Mets know that they don’t need to get those kinds of innings out of him and his Bugs Bunny pitch.
With all of the above mentioned moves made the bullpen would shape up to look as follows:
Joe Smith
Pedro Feliciano
Jorge Sosa
Orlando Hernandez
Scott Linebrink
Duaner Sanchez
Billy Wagner
This will surly be a far cry, in the good way, from the 2007 bullpen and if you were wondering about Scott Schoeneweis, I would have to try and include him in a deal for a starting pitcher from the Athletics or the Pirates (my personal preference).

Seeing Xavier Nady in last night’s game made me realize how much I still wished he didn’t have to trade him to Pittsburgh to get some relief help. It’s like a punch to the throat each time they show him at the plate in the Pirates uniform when all along we all know where he truly belongs.
What makes it even worse is that the trade was made possible by Duaner Sanchez’s rumbling belly in the wee hours of the night in Florida days before the Trade Deadline was to hit.
So in a long answer to irony, the Mets lost a young and very capable Right Fielder and a premier set up man all for a late night snack.
Almost makes me want to go on a hunger strike for some strange reason. Oh well, Nady, for me, will forever be known as the one that got away.

Once Duaner Sanchez comes off the disabled list, I suppose he will be a free agent. The Mets should consider re-signing him to a two- or three-year contract. He is so valuable to their bullpen when he's healthy. With nasty stuff and a blazing fastball, Sanchez should be the prime setup man when he returns, and should be in a Mets uniform for as long as possible. -- Jordan R., New York, N.Y.
First, Sanchez won't eligible for agency until after the 2009 season, when he has six years of Major League service.
Now, why would the Mets want to offer him anything more than one-season contract, even if they were competing for his services?
Sanchez did pitch brilliantly last season. But that was a finite body of work -- 55 1/3 innings in 49 appearances. No guarantee exists that he will be effective when he returns this season or next. And no part of the game is more fickle than short relief.
Sanchez has to prove himself all over again, and the episode in Spring Training when he was sent home for not adhering to the workout schedule didn't endear him to manager Willie Randolph.
